Dear Friends and Family:
Every year I intend to write this sooner, but it never happens!
The Carleton Varsity swim season went well in 05-06, with the men finishing 6th at the OUA Championships in February (just 5 points out of 5th) -- their best placing in 20 years. The women finished 10th. There are 13 teams competing in the OUA. A lot of the swimmers graduated in 2006, so this year the expectations are not quite so high, especially on the men's side, but the slightly smaller team did well at the November Eynon Division Championships (3rd on the men's side and 4th on the women's, for 3rd overall out of 6 teams). The Varsity web site is: http://carletonvarsityswim.tripod.com.
As well as coaching the Varsity team, I also continue to coach the Masters team: http://carletonmasters.tripod.com, and that is also going well, with lots of club records set by many swimmers over the past year. We have some new faster swimmers this year, as well as some rapidly improving beginners, giving a wide range of abilities to coach!
I taught just two courses in Carleton's Systems and Computer Engineering department in 05-06 but have three for this academic year, which is a relief as this is my major source of income! I just hope that the need for sessional lecturers continues! I enjoy the 3rd year course (real-time concurrent systems) that I teach in the summer. The 2nd year course that I'm teaching this fall and winter is more challenging due to the wide range of abilities of the students.
I traveled to Florida (Fort Lauderdale) again over New Year's last year with the Varsity team (and that's the plan for this year, too). I also visited Winnipeg in May to see my nephew, Carter (now 2), as well as my brother and sister-in-law (Ken and Angela), and my sister and brother-in-law (Karina and Don).
I changed age groups this year for Masters swimming (45-49 now) and managed to set 6 new world records (all short course meters, 25m pool): 800m freestyle, 1500m freestyle, 200m backstroke, 200m butterfly, 200m Individual Medley, and 400m Individual Medley. I also set numerous national, provincial and club records. This year at the annual St. Marys 5km swim (http://soloswims.com/st-marys.htm), I was first overall (for the 15th time), which was a surprise after finishing second last year. The younger guy who won last year did swim this year, but hadn't been training as much this year!
Best wishes to you and your family for 2007!
